The Kenyan Office of Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) is increasing its control over businesses to respect mandatory registration pursuant to the Kenyan 2021 Data Protection Regulation which entered into force on 14 July this year. The ODPC is asking businesses like bars, restaurants, dispensaries, schools and betting companies to register with the data commissioner regardless of their annual turnover or number of employees. These businesses where previously exempt entities. The 2021 Data Protection Regulation requires registration of data controllers and data processors including entities collecting and storing data, a requirement that came into effect amid increased complaints about lack of data protection laws and abuse of personal data exploitation in the African country. The Regulation targets all public and private entities that deal with personal data including non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and religious institutions. Read more on Nation Africa here.
